Whale survives harpoon attack 130 years ago to become ‘world’s oldest mammal’
A giant bowhead whale caught in Alaska in 2007 had already survived a similar hunt- nearly a century beforehand.
The harpoon imbedded in the whales neck was dated to have been made in 1880 meaning the whale has been cruising the arctic waters since the Victorian times. The weapon probably did explode but hit the whale in a non-lethal area and clearly was not a bother over the next 100 years! because whalers in those times never took calves, experts have estimated the whales age to have been 130. Bowheads are estimated to have a lifespan of up to 200 years but this is the best proof yet.
Bowhead whales are an endangered species
